A Bill by Omaha Senator Would Make May 19 Malcolm X Day in Nebraska

A bill sponsored by Omaha Senator Terrell McKinney would make May 19 El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, Malcolm X Day in Nebraska, according to a press release from the Unicameral.
The Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee considered the bill on Thursday listening to both support and opposition.
McKinney introduced Bill LB53 saying Malcolm X is “the most famous Nebraskan in the world,” and he is especially important to American, Black, and Muslim history.

“Malcolm X is one of the most fundamentally misunderstood people in American history,” McKinney said. “And perhaps the stigma around him would be extinguished if his achievements and contributions were recognized.”
JoAnna LeFlore-Ejike, the executive director of the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation, testified for the bill saying it would be “monumental” for future generations. to get young people excited about their cultural origins.
