Now More Than Ever

Donald Trump was never what we hoped he would be. He never will be. The “God-Emperor” memes from 2016 are now embarrassing. He broke his immigration promises, he arguably made things worse on race, and he never even controlled the bureaucracy. He is not the Once and Future King; he is not even Nayib Bukele. By 2020, I wanted to name him White Renegade of the Year for all the harm he had done and the good he failed to do.

This makes his conviction all the more important. Donald Trump is no threat to the status quo and, if reelected, would rekindle the average person’s loyalty to the country. If the United States gets into a serious conflict with a great power, Washington will need conservative white people to fight for Old Glory again.

However, our rulers do, at some level, believe their own propaganda and have convinced themselves Donald Trump is a threat to democracy. Therefore, they are shredding basic assumptions about the rule of law and the legitimacy of government in order to destroy him. They do not just want President Trump defeated; they want to confiscate his wealth, disgrace his family, and send him in jail.

The case itself was essentially about a bookkeeping error and even that is debatable. Attorney General Alvin Bragg, who is indulgent towards career criminals and quality-of-life crime, brought 34 counts against Donald Trump that could theoretically lead to 136 years in prison. The argument is that Donald Trump misclassified a “hush money” payment to Stormy Daniels as not a campaign contribution, and this was fraud. Incredibly, prosecutors and the judge decided the jury did not need to know what underlying crime was furthered by this supposed misclassification. Furthermore, a state has never, ever brought charges on violation of a federal law. The judge in the case, Juan Merchan, violated state ethics laws by making modest donations to President Joe Biden and Democrats, and to a group called “Stop Republicans.” He was let off with a warning — unlike Mr. Trump.

President Joe Biden said that no one is above the law. This came just a short time after he bragged about defying the Supreme Court to defer student loan repayments for voters likely to support him. Tens of millions of illegal immigrants are on American soil. Violent criminals are set free to commit more crimes, and we recently learned many had their PPP “loans” for COVID-19 forgiven. A special counsel said it would not bring charges against President Biden on a classified documents case because he was too old and confused to know what was going on and that a DC jury would be unlikely to convict. Rule of law, indeed.

There are countless people in America who are above the law. Law itself depends on geography, ideology, media coverage, and race. A confrontation with a violent black criminal could lead to congratulations from police in one town or a prison sentence in another. Derek Chauvin is in prison for life for doing what he was trained to do. A protest may lead to jail time or a new career depending on racial politics.

It is because the discrepancies are so obvious that our adversaries are so hysterical. Reporter Phil Wegmann summarized:

You saw Biden saying that it was irresponsible to say that this outcome was rigged. I think that that is going to be a central question as we move forward toward November. Is the system working as intended?

Earlier in the day, the former president made remarks at Trump Tower and he argued that the Biden family was behind all of this. The Trump campaign has regularly pointed out that one of the lawyers on Alvin Bragg’s team was formerly employed by the Department of Justice, that he had left to go join the Bragg prosecution. They pointed out that the daughter of Judge Merchan is a Democratic fundraiser. They’ve really done everything they can to tie this to the current president. . . .

The Biden White House knows Republicans believe he’s responsible for this. And the Biden campaign knows Trump and Republicans are going to be arguing nonstop, trying to make an appeal to independents, that this very much is lawfare and it’s, you know, one regime putting their rival in prison.

At American Renaissance, we often write about double standards. Blacks can do things whites can’t. While normal Americans were trapped in their homes during COVID-19, Black Lives Matter protesters had license to riot and loot. Antifa can usually attack patriots with impunity; patriots may do hard time for defending themselves. Complaining about double standards may seem tiresome. It is a meme now to depict conservatives saying, “imagine if the situation were reversed!” However, for normal people, double standards are the best way to show the system is rotten. People still find them shocking.

The Trump case may be the most spectacular example. Donald Trump is now a martyr, and the legitimacy of the system is at stake. White advocates — no matter what we do or how effective we are — will not get anywhere if the political status quo continues. It does not matter if Donald Trump – or any other candidate — is pure or committed. What matters is what he will do to the system’s legitimacy. Unless it gets broken, everything we do is academic. All political systems are sustained by myths, and one of the most important is sanctity of the “rule of law.” That illusion must be dispelled.

It is foolish for our rulers to be doing this. Donald Trump does not threaten the system. The campaign against him does. A “convicted felon” winning the highest office in the land, perhaps from prison, could open more political space than almost any other outcome we can imagine. Therefore, I welcome the campaign against President Trump and the fact that they are giving him no way out except forward.

Sun Tzu cautioned in The Art of War that one must offer opponents “a way to life so that they will not be in the mood to fight to the death.” MAGA is no threat to them and no panacea for us, but MAGA is not being offered a way out. The way to victory has always been for white identitarians to be the vanguard of the larger American Right. Our rulers have given us a priceless opportunity to play that role and discredit them at the same time.
