HISD Opens High School for Immigrants

HOUSTON — The Houston Independent School District opened a new high school for immigrants Monday.

About 125 students will attend the school, which holds night and weekend hours to accommodate students’ work schedules.

Classes are held from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

HISD said it’s an effort to increase the number of students who graduate. Most immigrant students enrolled in the new school are 19 or 20 years old, work a full-time job and have been in the U.S. for fewer than three years.

“Several students who have enrolled have said this new school will help them to achieve their American dream,” he said.
