NC Legislator’s Wife: Same Sex Marriage Ban Protects ‘Caucasian Race’

Jodie Brunstetter, the wife of North Carolina state legislator Peter Brunstetter told poll workers that her husband authored the state’s anti-same sex marriage law Amendment One to “protect the Caucasian race” and save the U.S. Constitution from “activist judges,” according to Chad Nance’s reporting for Yes! magazine.

Nance, who has resigned his post as campaign manager to a Democratic candidate for the state legislature to come forward with this story, was working as a volunteer poll worker Tuesday at an early voting location in downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Another poll worker, identified as “Michael” approached him with concerns about a woman who was arguing with opponents of Amendment One.

“Michael” and other poll workers who witnessed the discussion said that the woman identified herself as the wife of State Senator Peter Brunstetter. “During the conversation, Ms. Brunstetter said her husband was the architect of Amendment 1, and one of the reasons he wrote it was to protect the Caucasian race. She said Caucasians or whites created this country. We wrote the Constitution. This is about protecting the Constitution. There already is a law on the books against same-sex marriage, but this protects the Constitution from activist judges,” “Yes!” reported.
